I always wondered if I could paint in  watercolour after having had no formal training.  In 1994 I decided to attend a local authority night class.  I came home with my first attempts at drawing and we all laughed. In 1996 I joined Cartmel Art Society, mainly because they wanted a Secretary. When the Exhibition was due one of the older members encouraged me to put a painting in for sale. When I went to show him what I had put in I nearly went through the roof - it had a red dot (sold!) To think someone parted with their hard earned money to buy something I had painted was elating.  I have since been on many courses with Judith Milne, Helen Schofield, Eric Gleave, Louis Morton, Ann Blockley, Kate Bentley, and latterly Janette Phillips to mention but a few.  I love our Art Society, we have many workshops and I have made so many friends of like minds.

Joan Payne

I was eleven years old when to my surprise I won a school painting competition - a bunch of flowers in a jug painted with thin poster paint on thin paper! I still have the painting and the small trophy somewhere.

When I retired I decided to enrol on local day college courses to develop the interest for myself.  Landscape painting is my thing but I enjoy trying anything

and find workshops are invaluable in introducing you to different techniques and materials.  But I always return to watercolour.  Experimenting and the element of surprise intrigues me.

Since then I showed no real interest in painting and drawing until working with young children in my profession as a teacher.  Their freedom of expression was a joy to behold and I loved being involved with their art activities.

I hope I am developing my own style.  I am learning lots and enjoying the process.  I think I have come quite a long way since winning that small trophy all those years ago.
